Saturday night’s recital concludes with a performance of Bartok’s modern masterpiece, the Concerto for Orchestra. This week’s interval feature attempts to tell the story behind this remarkable work, as well as delving into the music itself.

After a stunning performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.4, the Alexander Orchestra conducted by Lawrence Renes received a standing ovation. The audience was rewarded with an encore: a light-hearted performance of the 'pizzicato' third movement.
Individual parts lie open on music stands, pencils are sharpened, the orchestra is tuned and the musicians quietly await their conductor to lead them to the music – it’s time for another rehearsal at the 2010 National Music Camp.
Sir Donald Bradman, a keen pianist, visited music camp in 1958. He even lent his 1938 test match gear to his niece and clarinet tutor Anne Menzies (Hazelwood), who put on the kit for the annual cricket match between staff and students. For the record, she took a few catches, but was less successful with the bat: out for a duck.
